According to SQ SQQ2, the training to become a Competent Person for Event Rigging is modular, divided into 3 levels, and includes theoretical and practical components. The entire training must be completed within 12 months.
Qualification Level: LEVEL 1
The Level 1 Competent Person for Event Rigging is qualified for basic rigging tasks, such as:
- Assembling truss systems
- Using work equipment correctly according to specifications
- Inspecting work equipment before use
- Rigging trusses to hoists
- Attaching loads to trusses
- Rigging to predefined attachment points on structures
- Wiring and operating motor controls (after electrical instruction by a qualified electrician)
- Safe use of hoists and operating system controls
- Using relevant knots (bowline, clove hitch, Prusik knot, double bull knot, sheet bend)
- Proper use of fall protection and workplace positioning systems (PSAgA)
Course Admission – LEVEL 1
Applicants must:
- Be at least 18 years old
- Provide proof of occupational medical fitness for work with fall hazards, e.g., G41
- Have completed first aid training

- Local stress in trusses and building structures
- Support reactions for multi-span beams
- Calculation of cable forces in two-leg bridles
- Reading and applying load tables and manufacturer data
Technical Work Equipment – Theory
- Materials and application areas of slings (inspection for competent persons)
- Dimensioning of slings per DGUV Information 215-313
- Uses, types, and applications of trusses (IGVW SQP1)
- Advantages and disadvantages of truss connector systems
- Overview of hoists and controls (IGVW SQP2) and related hazards, including electrical
- Rigging terminology, symbols, and markings
- Pulley/block and tackle principles
Technical Work Equipment – Practice
- Selecting and dimensioning slings
- Performing basic sling configurations (basket, choke, Beim clamp, half-beam clamp)
- Safe assembly and rigging of trusses
- Visual inspection of work equipment before, during, and after use
- Mastering essential knots (bowline, clove hitch)
- Proper use of hoists (correct chain handling, storage, and transport case usage)
- Secondary securing of D8 electric chain hoists with sling and chain shortener (DGUV 215-313, IGVW SQP2)
- Operating hoist controls
Personal Protective Equipment – Theory
- Selecting PPE based on risk assessments and operating instructions
- Manufacturer requirements for anchor point strength
- Components of fall protection PPE (harness, lanyard) and their use (fall-free zones, maximum system length)
- Components of workplace positioning systems according to IGVW SQO2 (adjustable lanyards)
- Differences between industrial helmets (EN 397) and climbing helmets (EN 12492)
- Differences between dynamic and semi-static ropes
- Pros and cons of various carabiner closures
- Use and function of descent devices
- Storage, maintenance, and inspection of PPE components
- Physical principles of falls (impact force, fall factor)
- Orthostatic shock/suspension trauma awareness
- Proper use of lifeline systems (number of users, anchor strength, fall-free zones)
Personal Protective Equipment – Practice
- Selecting, adjusting, and wearing PSAgA
- Testing attachment and positioning points via hanging test
- Inspecting PPE before use
- Correct use of fall arrest and positioning systems
- Mastering work-related knots (Prusik, double bull, sheet bend, figure-eight)
- Basic self-rescue techniques (Prusik & foot loop)
- Using various descent devices
