    I have looked at the Bastelhorn. I have run some simulations with the 18Sound 18LW-1400. Indeed this is a very good design. I would refer to a previous post in this topic where I talked about the way 18sound defines their x-max. The 18LW-1400 has an 25mm long coil and a 15mm thick poleplate. The resulting 5mm real x-max limits the SPL max of the Bastelhorn around 50Hz. Sure you can drive the 18LW-1400 up to 9mm but the effect of decreasing BL-factor (same effect as with a Tuba 24 loaded with Eminence Beta 10 compared to HL-10A) will give you a drop in SPL max which is not visible in Hornresp. For example the Punisher horn uses a 12" with real 11.5mm x-max, this gives you a design that with the same input power as the Bastelhorn gives the same output above 60Hz but will be able to give 8-9db more max SPL at 50Hz. But there is no free lunch, the Punisher is 1.3x as big as the Bastelhorn. All in all I think both designs are just as good (But one could argue that a 12" cone behaves better than a rigid piston than a 18" cone...)

    The 'BassBabe' does not play in the same class of heavey duty subwoofers. It is 1.35x as small a the Bastelhorn. It uses a 4kg 15" driver instead of a 13kg 18" monster. Also it doesn't need 1500W to reach its full potential. With its small size and weight of around 25kg it should be a nice sub to carry around and for its size it should still give some good usable output down to 50Hz. When a prototype is finished we will compare it to some other subs to get an idea about the performance.

    Maybe another driver suits better for the Bastelhorn - try the Oberton 18XB700 (http://www.oberton.com/Cone/18xb700data.htm). Also, scalability sould be mentioned - some drivers tend to be better in small stacks, others show their full potential only in stacks > 4 bins.

    But for your the bassbabe, stacking consideration are not neccessary - there will be only one or two of them, as you said. So we are waiting for the results of your prototype - let us know, how well your simulations described the real box, especially with maximum power.

    thank you for comparing the Bastelhorn with the Punisher, the way you look at the excursion is an important information for me. 8-9 dB SPL max @ 50 Hz more with the Punisher in singel use ? That surprises me.
    By the way i´m looking for a horn that gives me 50 to 200, where the 200 are the more important end.... so it has to be short and 12"... and unusual. It has to fit in an enclosure 120*120*60. I Think about a 3*12" straight Horn. Your Experience dealing with long excurcion 12"es can be helpful to reach some Output at 50 Hz. Bass 50-200 (?), Mid 200- 1500 (12") 1500-20000 (1") . The Tops have to be small, lightweight and loud, i don`t like the Sound of 2" Horns. That leads to the compromise at the low end. If i need more low end i put Infras there, but i won`t change the Top.

    I like the cabinet- design of your Babe, there is much stiffness in the construction with the diagonal Ports.

    i think its an interesting idea,
    small venue Subwoofer with a maximum of SPL and the abillity to run alone.

    but a single silly 18" BR is also small, if you dispense of frequencys below 50Hz.

    I think practical measurements will give the right answer to this ... :)

    P.S.: The "Bastelhorn" was not designed especially for the 1400 (it is only ONE suitable chassis prefered when working with one - or two - horns per side).
    Demands of the construction were: small 60x60x60-cube (transport !) that offers a wide range as possible (even "higher" frequencies above 150 Hz ...) to allow combinations with smaller MidHigh-Systems (such as 12" ...).

    I believe that both wide range and "deep bass" - with one 60x60x60-"box" - is not within reach when using a "classic horn" (=closed rear chamber). But there are other ways to improve this ... :)

    For the people who have a low budget: it should be possible to use the P-Audio SN-15B in the BassBabe with good results. At least here in the Netherlands these P-Audio woofers are a lot cheaper than 18sound 15ND-930.
